We The Kings
w/ Natives, Blitz Kids

Scala, London 30/01/13

words: Jenny Chu

Cheshire 4-piece Blitz Kids have the challenge of warming up a set already labeled as convivial with their alternative rock sound, they see through it well. Capturing rigid guitar melodies and peculiar yet stand out rhythms.

Natives need no introduction, as the 5-piece from Southampton open their exhilarating set with ‘Big Plans’. Fueled with excitement and endurance the band instructs the crowd to “have a little dance”. Diving head first into contagious summer-pop rock anthems, juxtaposed with jumping on the bandwagon with the sit-down-jump-up crowd interaction moment before introducing new single ‘Stand For Something’.

If pop rock fans were on a hunt for a good time, they sure came to the right place! They may have doubts when We The Kings take to the stage to an unpredictable hip-hop track but We The Kings are one 5-piece from across the pond who aren’t lacking in energy nor accuracy. As the group chant for ‘She Takes Me High’ soars through, every note is hit effortlessly. Frontman Travis Clark animates the stage with fist pumps, hair flips and a golden smile making quirky jokes about fellow guitarist Hunter actually being a “magician musician”.

Serenading fans with their rendition of Jason Mraz- ‘I’m Yours’ and chart topper ‘Don’t You Worry Child’, this set blends the best of their frontman’s passion, flourishing in tracks ‘All Again For You’ and cover of Jimmy Eat World- ‘The Middle’ with the ability to borrow songs and add a dose of pop rock element to it. Closing the ginormous and superbly upbeat set with ‘Check Yes Juliet’ We The Kings can certainly check mate to taking over the city tonight.
